A toxic or misaligned workplace culture does not always break you in a single day; it erodes your potential over time. Use this quick audit to evaluate your current seat.
For each statement, score your employer from 1 (Strongly Disagree) to 5 (Strongly Agree).
1. The Safety and Support Check (Mindset)
"When personal life or high-pressure situations hit, my manager and organisation respond with genuine empathy and flexible support, rather than subtle penalties or rolled eyes."
Why it matters: If you are part of the "Sandwich Generation" juggling childcare and caring for ageing relatives, or simply facing personal strain, a culture that lacks empathy will quickly cause unsustainable pressure to fracture your mindset.
Your Score (1 to 5): ______
2. The Growth and Ceiling Check (Skillset)
"My daily responsibilities actively stretch my capabilities, and there is a clear, unblocked pathway above me to step into higher-level roles."
Why it matters: Operating on autopilot leads to stagnation. If the structural path above you is permanently blocked by unmovable structures or favouritism, your skillset is hitting an artificial ceiling.
Your Score (1 to 5): ______
3. The Psychological Safety Check (Mindset)
"Expectations are transparent, goalposts remain steady, and mistakes are treated as constructive coaching moments rather than opportunities for blame or isolation."
Why it matters: Fear-based management kills innovation. Without psychological safety, you spend all your mental bandwidth operating in survival mode rather than growth mode.
Your Score (1 to 5): ______
4. The Value Exchange Check (Ambition)
"My compensation, recognition, and overall treatment accurately reflect current market rates and the true value of my expertise."
Why it matters: A healthy professional relationship must be balanced. If your financial and professional reward has fallen well behind your output, the foundational value exchange is broken.
Your Score (1 to 5): ______
5. The Future Alignment Check (Ambition)
"I feel genuinely motivated by the company’s long-term vision, and working toward their corporate milestones naturally advances my personal career goals."
Why it matters: Working hard for a future you do not believe in is exhausting. If there is a fundamental "Vision Gap" between your ambition and the direction of the organisation, you are building someone else's dream at the expense of your own.
Your Score (1 to 5): ______
Tallying Your Score: What the Numbers Mean
21 to 25 Points | High Alignment: Your current seat supports your growth. Your workplace actively protects your mindset and fuels your ambition.
15 to 20 Points | The Flickering Zone: There are clear warning signs. One or two areas are draining you, and it may be time for an open internal conversation before these flickers turn into bright signals.
Under 15 Points | Time to Move: The data and your reality match. Your current environment is actively compromising your mindset and stalling your potential. It is time to plan a strategic, intentional career move.
Where does your current role sit on the spectrum? If your score indicates it is time for a change, let RMErecruit map out your next move in complete confidence.
